Both ways are cool to do. However, make sure test the solution on corner of the fabric or on the waste material, which is similar to the upholstery fabric. If you do not, there is a possibility your upholstery will be ruined.
If you are going with pre packed cleaning solution, make sure you follow the direction of use. Using the formula in excessive manner can also ruin your upholstery.
Making home solution is also very easy. You just need to mix the following ingredients using a blender until it forms a foam.
- 1/4 cup of your favourite laundry detergent
- One cup warm water
Cleaning your upholstery without vacuuming is waste of time. Vacuuming is very important before cleaning because vacuuming removes all of the dust, dirt and pet hair that has accumulated in and on it.
If your furniture is without cushions, vacuum the fabric as much you can. If in case your furniture has cushions, remove them and then vacuum it. Vacuum all the debris that have been residing under the cushions for years. Utilize your vacuums different attachments, such as the crevice attachment, to get into those hard to reach places.
NOTE: Make sure you vacuum it properly at every part of the furniture. Especially the backside, sides, arms, bottoms, etc. of the furniture. They are often overlooked so that you can be sure that nothing is left back.
Dab Your Cleaning Solution on the Stain
Once you are done with the testing of the cleaning solution in a corner spot on your furniture for blotching, fading or shrinkage and seems it is safe to use, you can start with the actual cleaning process.
Take a spoonful of your cleaning solution and dab onto the upholstery. Start blotting at the stain with a clean towel or cotton rag. It should not take long to begin seeing dirt accumulating in the rag.
Rinse and Repeat the step
Take a clean washcloth, make it little wet and wipe the dirty suds. Rinse out the washcloth afterwards and repeat the cleaning process described above. You might need to spend more time for tough stained pieces.
Let the Upholstery Dry Completely
Once you are done with the cleaning process, let your upholstered furniture dry overnight. Once it is dried, vacuum the dried furniture one last time to get up any lifted dirt or dust from the cleaning solution.
